How to do a dog clipping properly

Successfully style dogs with a dog clipper.

GogiPet Dog Grooming Book German

Our dog groomer explains how to do a dog harness correctly.

With the purchase of a pet clipper (shearing machine) it is not done, simply switch on the pet clipper and start a clipp works in the fewest cases.

Our professional dog hairdresser with years of experience in dog grooming and dog styling has put together valuable advices for you to make sure that clipp will work.

Here are the basic tips on how a clipper works

The preparation:

Before you can start with the pet clipper, the coat must be clean and free of mats and tangles, please note that you cannot cut into mats but only underneath the felted area(s). The clipp can only be done as long as the felt is removed from the skin.

Dog wash

Step 1 Cleaning

Shearing heads (blades) become blunt very quickly if the coat is not cleaned well before.

The dog must be bathed well before. First the pre-wash is to do to remove the coarsest dirt and excess grease. Then rinse the coat well and shampoo the dog a second time to get the coat in the right condition.

The dog groomer usually uses the universal shampoo for the first shampooing and the breed specific shampoo for the second shampooing (black, white, brown...) If you bathe the dog at home, you can of course use the breed specific shampoo twice, but it is important that you shampoo twice.

How to do:

The water temperature should be between 37 and 38 degrees (not lukewarm, which is too cold for the dog). Put the shower head on the coat and soak the coat well. (The shower head should always be held very close to the body, so it is comfortable for the dog, do not bring water into the ears, if necessary use a cotton ball to plug them).

First shampooing:

For shorter hairs, it is best to use a rubber brush and massage the shampoo back and forth to remove loose hair. For longer hairs, brush the shampoo in the direction of growth (do not brush back and forth - you would confuse the hair even more instead of untangling it). Rinse out the shampoo.

Second shampooing:

Repeat the steps and try to loosen knots already now with the brush, then rinse the shampoo thoroughly. (If your dog has some more mats and tangels, it is best to use the longhair shampoo, this loosens the knots best)

Balsam yes or no?

It depends. For dogs that have a lot of volume in the coat, use the volume balm, it also helps to keep the hair upright when clipping and shear cutting.

In case of long hanging hair or with all dogs that have mats and tangels in their fur, it is essential that you use for the dog a hair mask. (the mask does not need to be washed out thoroughly, it helps to remove felt and prevents new felt, just rinse a little).

Dog dryer

Step 2 Drying

With long hair, it is important that you do not rub back and forth, otherwise you would confuse the hair and have to untangle it again with difficulty. Therefore, spread the water in the direction of growth or suck off the water by pressing. The GogiPet magic towel is best suited for this purpose as it absorbs a lot of water and can be used again immediately until the dog is as dry as possible.

Now the actual drying proces , de-mating and brushing starts. Ideally, a dog dryer is used for this, as it does not dry the coat, but blows the water out of the coat together with the dirt and lime residues and also dissolves mats and tangles. At the same time you should remove felt and knots with mechanical means.

With stubborn mats you have to proceed relatively radically if it can't be loosened, use a mat cuter (mat breaker) to cut the plates open.

Larger knots can be cut into pieces with the knot cutter (mat splitter) until you can finally untangle them with an untangling hook. Then brush out smaller knots, only when you can glide through the coat with the dog comb is the coat ready for clipping.

Step 3 Clipping preparation:

If your dog breed has undercoat, this will be completely or partially removed with the Coat Master.

The clipp is done in 3 repetitive steps:

Brush the coat against the direction of growth and cut the coat in the direction of growth, then brush against the direction of growth again and cut again in the direction of growth. Then do the same again to get a smooth and even clipp.

Always pay attention to the direction of growth, because if you cut once with and once against the line you will get different lengths. (Only in dog breeds where the coat cannot be combed up, the shearing is done against the direction of growth, but also here consistently against the direction of growth, but these are exceptions)

Please note:

It looks better if the legs are longer than the body shape, so the legs are usually cut with scissors. Legs also look better with a scissors cut, because you can style the legs (even if they are crooked) visually nice and straight. The transitions from the shorter body to the longer legs are worked with modelling scissors (thinning scissors) to create an even (invisible) transition. For most breeds, the tail is also best trimmed with the modelling scissors (thinning scissors).

The hair on the ears and between the pads is best removed with a paw clipper, as they are very low in vibration and do not tickle, very experienced dog groomers can also do this with paw scissors, but a paw clipper, is always safer.

These are the basic tips that our dog groomer has put together for you to be able to perform a successful clipping.

Get your dog excited about clipping. Your dog knows very well that he is beautifully made, we have seen many dogs strut proudly from our dog salons, most of all he is happy about a reward. How about as praise for the good cooperation with a Fair Trade dog toy?

Pet clippers test report

Personal experience with clippers

Personal experience with clippers in the clipper comparison

Our experience with the pet clippers is based on reports and experiences in our dog salon, our pet groomer partners, our pet groomer school, our customers (both pet groomers, veterinarians and private users) and our well-known dog breeders.

Top clippers for professionals:

For pet groomers who work continuously, only these clippers are suitable, you can use these clippers without hesitation in continuous use without any problems. We have had almost no repairs to date, although these are our best-selling clippers.

Differences:

The Heiniger Opal has now displaced all other pet clippers from the number 1 position. It is the most sold clipper with battery operation and Heiniger also offers a 2 year guarantee. In terms of speed, volume and battery power, the Heiniger Opal is unbeatable. The Heiniger Saphir models closely follow in second place, which basically only differ in design and equipment, but the Heiniger Saphir clippers themselves are technically the same. Aesculap Favorita pet clippers with the specially developed Slide blade system are very popular with pet groomers who already have experience with this system and stand out, as do the Aesculap Fav5 pet clippers with Snap On blade system, extra thanks to the metal oscillating lever, which protects against wear for a very long time even in continuous operation. The GogiPet pet clippers, on the other hand, have a fantastic price-performance ratio and are extra light and easy to use. GogiPet pet clippers are very popular with pet grooming beginners and are often used as a second machine by pet groomers due to their lightness and loudness. However, many pet groomers also work exclusively with GogiPet dog clippers on a permanent basis.

Top pet clippers for the breeder:

The ideal clippers for breeders and part-time pet groomers, they are slightly less expensive clippers that still perform very well. Breeders who use the clipper for small breeds or only for partial areas are especially enthusiastic about the GogiPet Orate, as it is extra light and can also score with specially developed blades for somewhat longer hair. As the clipper is not regularly used by the breeder for complete clipping, a cable clipper such as the GogiPet Horus, GogiPet Hathor or Heiniger Saphir Cord is preferred. Apart from the fact that these clippers are lighter, the maintenance costs are much lower, because a battery that is not used permanently breaks down prematurely. Friends of cordless pet clippers will be very pleased with the Heiniger Saphir models, the GogiPet Primus Set or the Aesculap Durati. The absolute insider tip of our pet groomers are the GogiPet Titanium ceramic clip blades, because they are the smoothest, do not get hot so quickly and you can easily replace the ceramic blades when they become blunt without having to send the clipper to a grinding service.

Differences:

The GogiPet pet clippers are characterised extra by the excellent price-performance ratio and stand for outstanding quality.
The Heiniger Saphir clippers from Switzerland have been known for their high standard for many years and offer not only a warranty but also a 2-year guarantee.
The Aesculap Durati is a relatively new clipper and has been improved with a higher stroke rate. In contrast to the tried and tested Aesculap pet clippers, the Durati has a plastic swivel lever.
Due to the relatively large number of complaints, we have discontinued the Oster, Andis, Wahl, Moser and AGC clippers from our range and concentrate on the top dog clippers, as we are extra concerned about the welfare of the animals and their care.

Clippers for the private user:

For small dog breeds and cat breeds, the GogiPet Orate is primarily appreciated, when used correctly, complete clipping is also possible, even though the GogiPet Orate was designed as a partial clipper. Since even pet groomers like to use this clipper for complete clipping on small dog breeds, GogiPet has also developed longer special clipper heads for the GogiPet Orate, as the attachment combs supplied are essentially only suitable for finishing on longer hair. When it comes to fine work and partial clipping, the GogiPet Orate is definitely ahead because it is extra small and light and can even be used for complete clipping on small dogs and cats once they have been thoroughly bathed, brushed and combed.

The GogiPet Horus dog and cat clippers are ideal for complete clipping and are equipped with the well-known Snap On blade system, so the blades are compatible with many other brands. The GogiPet Hathor is in no way inferior to the GogiPet Horus in quality, but is even smaller, lighter and faster. We recommend these pet clippers to private users as they are extra quiet and have 2 speed settings, making them ideal for anxious dogs. The Optimum Ultra and Heiniger Saphir Cord are also very good clippers, but due to their higher prices they are not very popular with private users. If you use the clipper very often, then you could also use a battery clipper, such as the extra low-priced Primus Set or the Heiniger Saphir pet clippers. However, if you only use the clipper occasionally, we recommend a corded clipper, as the battery wears out quickly if it is not used constantly. The Aesculap Durati would also qualify as a cordless clipper. Wahl, Andis and Moser machines have been taken out of our programme due to the bad reports.

Differences:

GogiPet Orate: For small dog breeds and cat breeds or as a section clipper. The hybrid clipper can be operated with battery or directly with electricity. Special blades available.
GogiPet Horus and GogiPet Hathor: Perfect for complete clipping and compatible with blades of many brands. Specially developed for the needs of private grooming. (small, light, quiet, ergonomic, 2 speeds for anxious animals). The GogiPet Hathor is the latest from GogiPet and has been made even lighter, quieter and faster using the latest technology).

Finishing machines, clippers for the paws, clippers for the show, clippers for the face and clippers that the pet groomer and the vet need for smaller jobs.

Aesculap Vega, Aesculap Isis, Heiniger Mini, Heiniger Midi, Super Trimm and GogiPet Orate. or also the GogiPet Hathor and GogiPet Horus for the paws using a paw blade.
All these machines are good small animal machines for finishing (refining after clipping, or if you have found a few small things that need to be corrected before the show).

Differences:

For extra small jobs on the paws, intimate areas and face, we use the Aesculap Isis or Heiniger Mini, they are slightly quiet and extra powerful. We no longer use the Wahl Super Stripping paws in our dog salons, as these jobs are done very often and the blades have to be changed every 2 weeks. We have had the Aesculap Isis and Heiniger Mini in our partner dog salons for several years now and only reorder the blades at rare intervals, so Aesculap and Heiniger are once again ahead of the game.
For coarser work we mainly use the Aesculap Vega and Heiniger Midi, the blade is adjustable from 1 - 3 mm and therefore the clippers are extra useful in the dog salon for fine work, we hardly ever use the plastic attachments that come with the clippers because, as with all plastic attachments, they can quickly become uneven. Lately, however, we have been doing most of this work with the brand new GogiPet Orate Speed, as the price/performance ratio of this clipper is unbeatable, it is extremely light and quiet.
The Optimum clippers round off the range, these machines have also proven themselves very well.

We therefore recommend these clippers extra. In the clipper comparison you will find our evaluation from the e-mails of our customers. Even though we (no longer) sell some of these clippers, we are pleased to hear about your current experiences.

We would also like to hear your opinion about pet clippers, please send us your experiences to info@hundefriseur-wien.at. We will collect all reports and gladly revise our test results. The more reports we receive, the better we can advise our customers.

pet shearing

Important for large animals

Blade use for pets:

For small animals such as dogs, cats and rodents, a blade can often last for many weeks or even months without having to sharpen it. Provided the coat is very well washed and brushed out and completely free of mats and the blade is oiled regularly (every 5 - 10 minutes of clipping time). See also the advice from our Pet groomer.

Blade use for large animals:

In large animals such as horses, ponies, cattles, etc., the hair is thicker and more robust than in pets, which means that there is more resistance to clipping and therefore more wear and tear.

This means that the life of the blade is generally shorter.

In order to keep the wear of the blade as low as possible, the cleanliness of the coat is of utmost importance. (Wash with good shampoo and brush out the hair well).

If the clipping blade comes into contact with dirt (e.g. dust) during clipping, the blade is immediately blunt and must be sharpened.

According to our experience, it is quite possible to shear several horses with the same blade, provided they have been washed very thoroughly beforehand and the blades are oiled every 5 - 10 minutes.

If this is not the case, several blades may be needed per horse.

The biggest challenge is to clean the coat really well.

We often get requests from horse owners for clippers or clipper heads with which even sandy or dirty coats can be clipped. Unfortunately, there is no such thing, the coat has to be really clean and the blades have to be well oiled regularly.
