Mat Breaker (Dematter)
Dematters, known as Mat Breakers, are effective tools for the safe removal of matted fur that can form on dogs and cats when grooming is neglected. Especially when brushing is not done regularly down to the skin, mats can develop that should no longer be cut with scissors, as there is a high risk of injury—you can easily cut the skin as well. In contrast, the Mat Breaker has sharp blades that are guided along the skin to break up the mats, which can then be brushed out. The Mat Breaker also allows you to reach difficult areas without harming the pet.
Tips for Coat Preparation Before Clipping
Before clipping, the coat must be thoroughly washed and properly de-matted to allow the clipper head to glide through the fur. (Unwashed fur can severely damage the clipper head even after a short clipping session)
- If the dog is a breed with an undercoat, remove the undercoat first—this works best with a Coat Master
- Shampoo twice, rinse, and optionally apply a balm.
- If mats have already formed, first break them up with a Mat Breaker
- Divide larger tangles using a Knot Cutter
- Remove smaller or split knots using a Detangling Hook
- While drying, brush the coat until a comb can glide through the fur
- Now you can begin the clipping
If stubborn mats are difficult to remove, additionally use a dematting spray, which helps loosen the mats and prevents new ones from forming.
